The 3 Biggest Mistakes Made When Measuring Swatches
Follow these testing protocols to ensure your gauge calculation reflects your real-world stitching.
Always make your swatch at least 5" × 5" or 6" × 6". Edge stitches curl, stretch, and behave unnaturally. By making a larger swatch, you can measure the pristine 4 inches in the center without edge distortion.
Soft vinyl sewing tape measures can stretch out over time or sag into the fabric texture, skewing your count by 1–2 stitches. Place a solid wooden or metal ruler firmly across the swatch without pulling the fabric.
Fibers (especially wool, alpaca, and cotton) relax, bloom, and lengthen when washed. Wet-block your swatch and let it dry before counting stitches to ensure your sweater doesn't grow 4 inches on its first wash.
