Crochet Yardage & Skein Calculator

Calculate the total square inches (Width × Length), then multiply by the stitch density constant for your yarn weight. In worsted weight single crochet, 1 square inch requires ~0.44 yards of yarn. A 50" × 60" throw (3,000 sq in) requires approximately 3,000 × 0.44 = 1,320 yards in basic stitches, or up to 2,200 yards in dense textured stitches like waffle or basketweave.

Front/back post stitches (waffle stitch, alpine stitch, basketweave), bobble/puff/popcorn stitches, and dense single crochet use 30% to 50% more yarn than open stitches. Lacy double crochet, V-stitch, and granny mesh consume the least yarn per square inch.

We recommend adding a 10% safety buffer for standard projects, and a 15% buffer for fitted garments, heavily textured blankets, or multi-color stripe patterns where color transitions leave longer tails.

Divide the total estimated yards by the yardage printed on your yarn’s label, then always round UP to the next whole skein. Be sure to purchase all skeins from the same dye lot to avoid subtle color mismatches.
